The Kampong: A Secret Botanical Paradise in the Heart of Miami That Will Make You Fall in Love with the Tropics
95

The Kampong — a botanical garden and historic estate located in the cozy Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, Florida. It is one of five gardens that are part of the United States National Tropical Botanical Garden and represents a unique combination of tropical nature, scientific heritage, and architecture.

This picturesque garden was founded in 1916 by Dr. David Fairchild, a world-renowned botanist and researcher. Fairchild dedicated his life to studying and introducing new plant species to the United States. He named his estate "Kampong," which means "village" in Malay, as a symbol of his travels to Southeast Asia.

After Fairchild's death, The Kampong was acquired by the Saunders family, who preserved the botanical collection and continued to develop the garden as a cultural and scientific center.

What makes the garden unique?

The Kampong is home to over 200 species of tropical plants from different parts of the world. Here you can see:

  • Exotic fruits: from durians and jackfruits to rare varieties of citrus.
  • Valuable trees: such as fragrant cananga (source of ylang-ylang essential oil) and Balinese palms.
  • Bamboo groves: various bamboo species create an atmosphere of true jungles.
  • Orchards and flower meadows: vibrant orchids and fragrant flowers captivate with their beauty and scents.

The garden harmoniously combines natural landscapes with elements of Asian and colonial architecture. Fairchild's house has been preserved to this day and reflects his passion for nature and culture. The interiors of the house are decorated with antique furniture, artifacts from travels, and vintage photographs.

From the garden's territory, wonderful views of Biscayne Bay open, adding a special charm to this place.

Who is this place for?

The Kampong is perfect for nature lovers, scientists, families with children, as well as those seeking tranquility and inspiration. It is a true sanctuary away from city hustle, where you can enjoy silence, the beauty of nature, and a rich history.
