In the very heart of the picturesque town of Clinton, New Jersey, one of the most recognizable historical symbols of the region is located — The Red Mill. This four-story building, towering on the banks of the South Branch Raritan River, is a vivid testament to the centuries-old history of American industry, trade, and culture. Beginnings: from land ownership to industrial mill
The history of this site began as early as 1761, when the landowner was David McKinney. Around 1810, Ralph Hunt, having inherited the land from his father Daniel, built the Red Mill here. Interestingly, Daniel Hunt at one time constructed a Stone Mill on the other side of the river, which is today known as the Hunterdon Art Museum.
Initially, the Red Mill was used for wool processing. However, by 1820, this business had failed due to an economic downturn in the textile industry. Losing hope of restoring his finances, Ralph Hunt was forced to part with not only the mill but also hundreds of acres of land on both sides of the river.
Throughout its history, the mill has performed various functions. After an unsuccessful start as a woolen factory, it operated as a basket manufacturing plant for peaches and even as a textile enterprise. Such a diverse functionality highlights its importance to the local economy and its adaptability to the needs of different eras.
In 1974, the Red Mill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a site of great significance to the development of agriculture and trade. In 1995, it became part of the Clinton Historic District, which further emphasized its importance.
Transformation into a museum
The Red Mill found new life in 1960 when a group of enthusiasts known as the Red Mill Five, led by local artist James R. Marsh and Monroe F. Demott, purchased this historic building. In 1964, Marsh also acquired the adjacent M.C. Mulligan & Sons quarry, which was turned over to the Clinton Historical Museum. Just a year later, in 1965, the museum opened its doors to visitors.
Today, the Red Mill is the centerpiece of the Red Mill Museum Village — a unique open-air museum that introduces visitors to the region's rich history.
