Oakland Historic Cemetery: An Open-Air Living Museum in Atlanta
61

Oakland Historic Cemetery — the oldest public park in Atlanta and the resting place of many notable residents of the city. Located less than a mile from downtown, it spans 48 acres filled with history, gardens, sculptures, and architecture. Established in 1850 as Atlanta's city cemetery on a 6-acre plot, it was renamed Oakland in 1872 due to the numerous oaks and magnolias on its grounds. Over time, the cemetery expanded to its current 48 acres and is now situated in the very heart of the city.

Oakland is a splendid example of Victorian style and reflects the "garden cemetery" movement initiated by Mount Auburn Cemetery in Massachusetts. Approximately 70,000 people are buried here, including notable individuals such as Margaret Mitchell, author of *Gone with the Wind*, and legendary golfer Bobby Jones.

The cemetery is divided into various sections reflecting Atlanta's history and culture, including an old and a new Jewish section, the "Potter's Field" for the impoverished, a separate section for African Americans, and a Confederate section where Civil War soldiers are buried.

Visitors can enjoy walks among ancient graves, monuments, and picturesque gardens. The cemetery also offers a variety of tours and events throughout the year, providing an opportunity to delve deeper into Atlanta's history and culture.

For planning your visit and additional information, it is recommended to visit the official website of Oakland Historic Cemetery.
