The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA), located in the heart of New York City, is a true treasure for all those interested in the rich history and culture of Chinese immigrants in the USA. This non-profit educational and cultural institution has been working for over four decades to preserve the living heritage of the Chinese community in America.
History and Development
MOCA was founded in 1980 as part of the Manhattan Chinatown History Project. Its founders — historian John Kuowei Chen and activist Charles Lai — aimed to preserve the stories and memories of the older generations of Chinese immigrants.
Over the years, the museum has significantly expanded. In 2009, it moved into a new building on Center Street designed by architect Maya Lin. The spacious gallery is six times larger than the previous location, and the central exhibit "With a Single Step" narrates the 160-year history of Chinese people in America.
One of the most difficult moments in the museum’s history was the fire in January 2020, which damaged over 85,000 artifacts. Despite this, thanks to the efforts of specialists, the majority of the collection was restored. In July 2021, the museum reopened its doors to visitors, demonstrating the community's resilience and the importance of its mission.
Exhibitions and Programs
MOCA offers a wide range of exhibitions and programs covering topics from culinary arts to visual arts. The permanent exhibit "With a Single Step" tells about the adaptation and contributions of Chinese immigrants to the development of America. Temporary exhibitions have included titles such as "Responses: Asian American Voices Resisting the Tides of Racism," dedicated to fighting racism, and "Sour, Sweet, Bitter, Spicy," which explored identity through Chinese cuisine.
In addition to its exhibits, the museum serves as a research hub. Its archives contain unique collections, including documents, photographs, historical artifacts, and oral histories. Among the most renowned collections are works created by immigrants on the ship "Golden Venture," wedding dresses from the early 20th century, and Chinese opera costumes.
In 2024, MOCA purchased the main building on Center Street for $51.1 million and announced ambitious plans to expand to 68,000 square feet. These developments aim to strengthen the museum’s role as a cultural center of the Chinese community in America.
