Buckland Museum of Witchcraft & Magick
185

The Witchcraft and Magic Museum of Baklenda was founded by Raymond Buckland in 1966. Inspired by his visit to Gerald Gardner’s collection on the Isle of Man, Raymond began collecting his own artifacts while working for British Airways, sourcing them from various parts of the world. Initially, the museum consisted of just a few shelves in the basement of his Long Island house. However, the collection quickly grew, reaching over 500 artifacts. It was the first museum in the USA to adopt an anthropological approach to the world of folklore and the supernatural.

From 1966 to 1973, the museum operated in New York and received significant media attention. Articles about it appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Cosmopolitan, and Esquire, and some exhibits were showcased in a special exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum. Raymond Buckland also gave interviews on radio and television both in the USA and abroad.

Guided tours of the Baklenda Witchcraft and Magic Museum begin with a brief introduction to Raymond Buckland, his connection to Gerald Gardner, and the history of the museum's founding and development. The visit usually lasts about 45 minutes, but this may vary depending on the visitors’ interest and attention. Dedicated Wicca enthusiasts might spend only 15 minutes in the museum and be satisfied, while others less familiar with the subject may stay for two hours or more. The museum showcases over 200 artifacts, creating a rich and engaging atmosphere for each guest.
